South Petherton crowned Champions for sixth time

Misterton back in Division One

DOUBLES from top-scorer Jon Hayter and Lee Richards helped South Petherton secure a 6-1 win over Farway United on Tuesday.

The victory means Pethy are mathematically guaranteed their fourth title in six seasons and sixth overall.

Lyme Regis kept up the chase with a similar 6-1 scoreline at Combe Reserves on the same night.

So Saturday’s clash between the big two at the Davey Fort, which appears to have been stratigically delayed until the last game of the season for the third year in a row, now becomes meaningless.

Despite occupying one of the bottom two places for the majority of the season and impressive run of five wins from six matches means Premier Division football will be played at Oxleaze for at least another season.

Top Scorer Nick Bond opened the scoring with his 10th goal of the season only for Stuart Packer to net his 250th career goal and level for opponets Perry Street.

But Ollie Hutchings popped up with a winner and the Chinnocks headed off up to seventh spot.
From a team on the up to a team heading in the opposite direction. Misterton’s misery was extended by an 8-2 thumping by Farway United.

Jak Flatt and his belegured squad can have few complaints; nine straight defeats is relegation form in anybody’s book. Flatt has put the side’s relegtion down to: “poor commitment from my players and a lack of support from the Reserves.”

But who will accompany Misterton? Barrington currently occupy that spot. The Yellow Hammers’ last game tomorrow is, on paper tougher than rivals’ Perry Street; Barrington entertain the Chinnocks whilst Perry Street welcome Misterton who are just about on their knees having conceded 57 times in their last eight outings.

DIVISION ONE

CHAMPIONS Crewkerne Town fittingly marked their return to the Premier Division in fine style with a 6-2 win at Forton Rangers.

Manager Nick Murphy fielded a completely changed line-up. Goalkeeper Dale Wood played up fron t and scored twice as the team racked-up it’s seventh straight win.

Murphy was understandably full of praise for his team and the rejuivenated club as a whole, he said: “I am over the moon with how the season has gone this year, for both teams, at Crewkerne.

“Our aim at the start of the season was to hopefully get promoted and get back to where I feel this town belongs - in the Premier.

“Fresh faces have helped the first team to gel better as a unit and have really pushed the club forward.

We have played 31 league and cup games this season and scored 136 goals in the process, goals have come from all areas which again has been a huge bonus. (Top five goal Scoreres Jamie Spurdle 31, Barry Hayne 20, Paul Gold 18, Kevy Wheeler 17 and Adam Dawe 10.)

“Overall I would like to say a huge thank you to all the players, Darren Frost (linesman every week), the supporters who have come to nearly every game, Ben and Jimmy - the Tigers’ reserve team Managers and the committee (Kev, Budgie, Donna, Jan etc) for all their commitment and efforts. Roll on next season.”

Crewkerne End of Season Night is on Saturday, June 4th atCrewkerne Sports Club (tickets priced at £15 per head).

DIVISION TWO

WITH rivals Hawkchurch United thrashed 7-2 by Champions Beaminster Reserves, Chard Rangers took full advanatage and gave their survival hopes a huge boost with a tense 2-1 win over already-relegated Forton Reserves at Jocelyn Park.

It certainly wasn’t a stroll. The teams were locked at 1-1 but John Mason’s late winner means Rangers , despite going down 2-1 at Pymore on Tuesday can still scramble clear of the drop with a point from tomorrow’s visit by already-promoted Shepton Beauchamp.

“We’ll give it a real go. We took a point off them (Shepton) at their place back in October, so who knows?” said Rangers’ boss Justin Mason.

Shepton for their part recoved from going one down to an early Kris Hastings own goal to comeback and beat Uplyme 4-2 at Venlake in Saturday’s dress rehearsal for the Tommy Tabberer Cup Final.

DIVISION THREE

CONVINCING wins over Drimpton (4-0 on Saturday and Lyme Bantams (8-0) on Tuesday have seen Misterton Reserves stride clear at the top and take the Division Three title for the second time (the first being in 1991-92).

Winsham Reserves continued their good form a with a fine 4-4 draw against Crewkerne Reserves on Saturday. Player-manager Richard White netted a hat-trick which included a last minute overhead kick!

DIVISION FOUR

CONGRATULATIONS go to West & Middle Chinnock Reserves who have completed thier first season in the league by being promoted and racking up the highest goals total (118) for many years.

The Chinnocks’ could even be crowned Champions if rivals Hinton Reserves fail to win at Shepton Beauchamp Reserves tomorrow.

CUPS

WINSHAM United and Netherbury were due to go head-to-head at Axminster tonight (6.15pm k.o.) with the Arthur Gage Cup at stake.

Despite trailing 2-1 in the previous encounters between the sides this season Winsham’s superb end of season form (WWWWLWW) makes them slight favourites as they attempt to lift the trophy for the first time since their only previous triumph back in 1966.

Meanwhile Lee Mears’ 17th goal of the season couldn’t save Dowlish & Donyatt from a 2-1 defeat against Shepton Beauchamp in the Jack Venn Cup Final at Combe on Monday.

Top scorer Sam Murley levelled Mears opener on the stroke of half-time and notched the winner for Shepton two minutes from time.
