Another away trip in FA Cup

Monkey Hangers or Vauxhall Motors up next

YEOVIL Town avoided the inevitable banana skin that haunts league teams when the FA Cup comes around. So often the headline makers in the past, the Glovers were the potential victims this time when they visited Nene Park last Saturday in the first round proper.

However, a controversial Andy Williams just seven minutes from the end was enough to give them victory over Blue Square Bet Premier Rushden & Diamonds, and revenge for a 3-1 defeat in the same round in 2006.

The Glovers had struck the woodwork twice in the first half; Sam Williams’ shot having cannoned off the post before Paul Huntingdon struck the crossbar with a header soon after; whilst the host’s were also unlucky when Lewis Spence’s shot was brilliantly tipped onto the crossbar by John Sullivan.

In an entertaining game despite the lack of goals, it appeared that Yeovil had settled for a replay at Huish Park when they scored the decider late on.

The Diamonds claimed the goal should have been disallowed because Sam Williams stood in an offside position, had blocked keeper Joe Day’s view as he attempted to save Andy William’s shot after the keeper had parried Dean Bowditch’s original effort.

However after consultation with his assistant referee Mark Brown allowed the goal to stand.
The draw for the second round however was not kind to the Glovers who have to travel again; this time either to Victoria Park to meet the Monkey Hangers - Hartlepool United, or
Ellesmere Port, Cheshire to Blue Square Bet North side Vauxhall Motors.

The tie is to be played on the weekend of the 26th/27th or 28th November depending on the outcome of the replay next Tuesday after the sides fought out a 0-0 draw in Tyne and Wear last Saturday.

THE shirts worn by Yeovil Town on Saturday for the home match against Dagenham & Redbridge will once again be auctioned in aid of The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

The shirts which will all be embroidered with a poppy will be signed by the player and will be offered for auction where it is hoped that each shirt will raise at least £100.

The minimum bid for each shirt is £30, and bidders will be notified when their offer has been exceeded so they can make a further bid if required.

Bids can be made by contacting RBL county secretary Dave Brixey at dbrixey@britishlegion.org.uk or by telephone on 01278 442061 before the closing date at noon on Monday November 29th.

There will also be a collection at half time during Saturday’s match by members of the Armed Forces based at RNAS Yeovilton.

Glovers chief executive Martin Starnes and manager Terry Skiverton both stated how proud they were that the club were associated with the appeal
